CHICAGO- With over a thousand different varieties of mangoes to choose from, selecting the right variety for mango products can be a daunting task. A new study in the Journal of Food Science, published by the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT), explores the impact that processing has on the flavor and texture of mango varieties. Findings suggest that processing plays an important role in determining the flavor and texture of the final product.

Researchers at Kansas State University studied the flavor and texture of four different mango varieties as they were processed from fresh mango to heat-treated pure to sorbet. Although many of the variety-specific flavor characteristics were carried over to the pures, processing had a different impact on each of the varieties, boosting or reducing the intensities of certain flavors in some, while not in others. Only very distinct flavor properties of the cultivars carried over to the sorbets, most of the variation in texture was lost once the mangoes were processed.

With the rising popularity of mango flavored products and increasing consumer awareness about fruit varieties, understanding differences among mango cultivars is becoming increasingly important. Findings from the current study serve as one resource that mango pure and sorbet manufacturers can use when choosing the right variety for their products.

WALTHAM, Mass.-October 16, 2012-A123 Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: AONE) ("A123" or "the Company"), a developer and manufacturer of advanced Nanophosphate? lithium iron phosphate batteries and systems, today announced that it has entered into an asset purchase agreement with Johnson Controls, Inc. (NYSE: JCI) in a transaction valued at $125 million. Under the terms of the agreement, Johnson Controls plans to acquire A123's automotive business assets, including all of its automotive technology, products and customer contracts; its facilities in Livonia and Romulus, Michigan; its cathode powder manufacturing facilities in China, and A123's equity interest in Shanghai Advanced Traction Battery Systems Co., A123's joint venture with Shanghai Automotive. The asset purchase agreement also includes provisions through which Johnson Controls intends to license back to A123 certain technology for its grid, commercial and government businesses. A123 also continues to engage in active discussions regarding strategic alternatives for its grid, commercial, government and other operations, and has received several indications of interest for these businesses.

To facilitate the transaction process, A123 and all of its U.S. subsidiaries today filed voluntary petitions for reorganization under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware. The Company's subsidiaries located outside the U.S. were not included in the filings. This action is expected to allow the Company to provide for an orderly sale of the automotive business assets and all other assets and business units under Section 363 of the Bankruptcy Code and enable the Company to maximize the value of its assets for its stakeholders in a controlled, court-supervised environment.

In conjunction with the proposed transaction, A123 has received a commitment from Johnson Controls for $72.5 million in "debtor in possession" financing to support the Company's continued operations during the pendency of the sale process. The Company has filed a number of customary motions seeking court authorization to continue to support its business operations during the transaction process, including the continued payment of employee wages, salaries and health benefits without interruption.

"We believe the asset purchase agreement with Johnson Controls, coupled with a Chapter 11 filing, is in the best interests of A123 and its stakeholders at this time," said David Vieau, Chief Executive Officer of A123. "We determined not to move forward with the previously announced Wanxiang agreement as a result of unanticipated and significant challenges to its completion. Since disclosing the Wanxiang agreement, we have simultaneously been evaluating contingencies, and we are pleased that Johnson Controls recognizes the inherent value of our automotive technology and automotive business assets. We are also pleased that we have received indications of interest that recognize the value of our grid and commercial businesses. We are encouraged by the significant interest we have received, as multiple parties have submitted proposals for these businesses. As we move through this transaction process, we expect to continue operating and working with customers and suppliers."

At any time of the day when you are about to say something negative like ?I can never do this!? or ?I?m so dumb!? hold your tongue and say ?Cancel! Cancel!? or ?Delete! Delete!? It is important to keep your inner dialogue absolutely positive and void from pessimistic poisons.

3. Take inspired action! The universe helps those who help themselves. If you?ve ever watched ?My Name is Earl,? you?ll probably know what karma is. It states that if you do something good, an equally good thing will come back to you. And if you do something bad, an equally bad thing will come back to you.

You reap what you sow. Therefore, if you just keep daydreaming and don?t do anything, the universe won?t do anything to help you either.

4. Receive openly. The Law of Attraction is more powerful if you open up and allow yourself to receive the abundance that the universe supplies to you. If you reject your blessings, you are stopping the flow of prosperity and decreasing your attracting force. Acknowledge even the smallest things in life.

Remember to always say ?Thank you.? Let the universe know how much you appreciate all the abundant gifts you are receiving. Show sincere gratitude, and the universe will respond appropriately by giving you more.

Understand it, know exactly how to use and maximize its potential to the fullest, and start applying its principles to manifest everything you?ve always dreamed of. You have the power within you! The Wisconsin congressman tells a crowd of 1,400 people at Youngstown State University on Saturday that a strong manufacturing industry is key to a strong economy. And he says President Barack Obama hasn't done enough to strengthen the U.S. economy.

The Republicans also are trying to energize Ohio's young voters this weekend. Ryan is planning to attend tailgate parties at Bowling Green State University later in the day, and GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney has an afternoon rally at Shawnee State University in Portsmouth, Ohio.

The Democrats counter that the GOP is pushing the same policies that led to the economic crisis in the first place.

Being exposed to the approach of Kevin Eikenberry about building or nurturing relationships has made a lot of issues become clearer.

Although most people think he plays around with words by trying to differentiate building from nurturing; I?ve realised that this could possibly be the cause of some problems wrecking lovers for ages.

This might sound like a little diversion but bear with me as it might beam some useful light on why you are struggling in that relationship.

We have all used ?building relationships? to portray the effort/commitment you put into making it work ?this is fine. On the other hand, there are relationships which started by someone going out of the way to get the other involved.

In most cases, men feel fulfilled to be in this ?chasing position? because nature tells them hunting is the meaning of existence but when women swap and take the hunting role, does it always end well? I don?t know and would not want to say what I?m not sure of.

Statistics have shown that relationship birthed out of pressure or manipulation does not always last. Yes, someone has to make the first move but when the feelings don?t merge over time, it means; one person is driven by expected benefit or the fear of being single is making them desire or initiate a relationship to serve a hidden purpose other than true love and lifetime commitment.

Going into a relationship either by what you can get or for fear of being alone are both dangerous. Right in the heart of marriages are people who know for sure they would naturally not want to be with the persons they have chosen. Selfish reasons have made folks say ?YES? to relationships they know from the start does not have a future. Why would a guy push for a babe simply because she is a daughter of an MP, Senator, celebrity or business mogul? Are you marrying for names/status or your future together? A lady who looks at her biological clock and starts to draw guys close by all means most times ends up in wrong hands. You would have heard a thousand and one stories like that. If you are a nice person and someone is attracted to you and later decides to stay till death do you part; that?s okay but allowing desperation to drive you crazy is unwise.

Someone might say; ?you don?t know how it is to be lonely?, ?our society looks down on mature single girls?, ?a guy is referred to being responsible if he is married?? ?life means nothing to me without a man?, ?being married is a cover?, ?I?m dying to get into my dream wedding dress and enjoy that special day?, ?so much pressure from family and friends is driving me nuts?, etc. You might have dozens of excuses making you want to escape singlehood at all costs but have you considered how painful a bad relationship/marriage could be for both men and women? Actually, it?s worse than not ever being married at all. I?ve spoken to loads of people who wish they were never married. The heart ache of a bad relationship kills you faster than loneliness. It?s worse when people outside think you are enjoying that union while you are actually roasting in there. Sometimes for the sake of pride and privacy, you don?t want to tell them what you are going through.? This, no matter how well you pretend, does not make the pains go away; it rather increases by the day.

Have you ever had the opportunity to speak to a man who followed physical beauty only to discover that she was totally empty inside? Oh no! He?ll hate the mere sight of her ?overtly decorated posture?. Marriage is not only for looks; an intelligent, productive, virtuous, organised, supportive, complementing spouse would forever be cherished.

Love should be mutual; two people attracted to each other and committed to making it work achieve better results. You don?t need to force or manipulate love, just give it a chance to happen. If it does and you both now agree to walk together and share your lives, here are certain things that can help you nurture and strengthen your decision.

?? ? ? ? Communication: The voice of someone you detest is a blast to your eardrum ?you wish they were silent all day but when a loved one refuses to have a word with you, it?s a bother. I appreciate the fact that words are not the only way to communicate; body language, gestures and sometimes ?false silence? could be counted for communication. You know what I mean by ?false silence?? When you suddenly lose your voice when he/she shows up ?you are too overwhelmed to verbalise your feelings but this happens mostly at the early stage of the relationship and mature into long gaze as the relationship grows. All you are doing here is silently analysing how fortunate you have been to be associated with them.

When I was younger, I wondered why almost every relationship book or publication would have something to say about communication but now it is a lot clearer. If you want to know the value someone places on you, watch what and how they talk to you: deeper relationship ?deeper communication, shallow relationship ?shallow communication. Even in ordinary terms, there are persons you would not want to hear what you are discussing with others. Why? They are not at that level of closeness with you.

People can forget what you did to them over time but the words you spoke ten, twenty, thirty or more years ago can still be heard as fresh in the ears/heart of the receiver. The words you say to your spouse play back in them and go a long way to condition how they feel about the union. Matching actions with words puts an indelible seal on your value for love; be it negative or positive. If you tell your spouse you love them and your actions portray so, they?ll believe you quicker than just words and if you?ve ever told your love you hate them; everything you do will be measured to see if you are manifesting the hatred or taking it further.

Mars rover finds 'unusual rock'

It was expected to be just another lump of dull basalt, but the first rock examined up close by Nasa's Mars rover proved to be a little more interesting.

The pyramidal object, nicknamed "Jake Matijevic" after a recently passed mission engineer, had a composition not seen on the planet before. Scientists have likened it to some unusual but well known rocks on Earth.

These form from relatively water-rich magmas that have cooled slowly at raised pressures, said Edward Stolper.

"[The rock is] widespread on Earth, on oceanic islands such as Hawaii, and St Helena, and the Azores; and also in rift zones like the Rio Grande and so forth. So, again, it's not common, but it's very well known," the mission co-investigator from the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, told reporters.

The Curiosity rover examined Jake Matijevic three weeks ago. At the time, the dark rock was not anticipated to have high science value; it was merely an early opportunity to use the robot's survey instruments in unison.

Jake Matijevic also had an interesting, weathered appearance that drew attention.

The rover first zapped the rock from a distance with its ChemCam laser, and then moved in close to study it with its X-ray spectrometer known as APXS. The latter device is held on the end of the rover's robotic arm; the laser is mounted on its mast.

Jake Matijevic was found to be high in elements consistent with the mineral feldspar, such as sodium and potassium, and low in elements such as magnesium and iron.

Prof Stolper compared the signatures with a catalogue containing thousands of Earth rocks, and determined the nearest match to be an igneous type, the formation of which he likened to the production of colonial apple jack liquor.

This saw barrels of cider left outside in winter to partially freeze. As the barrels iced up, it would concentrate the apple-flavoured liquor.

A similar process was occurred in the liquid magma several kilometres underground that gave rise to alkalic rocks like Jake Matijevic, said Prof Stolper.

"In the case of the apple jack, you take out water and concentrate alcohol; in this case you take out particular minerals - olivines, pyroxenes and some feldspars - and you generate a liquid that is very different to what you started with," he explained.

"So, the composition of Jake Matijevic is a very close match to highly crystallised or fractionated magmas that occur in particular places on Earth."

Curiosity landed in Mars' equatorial Gale Crater in August, and has driven eastwards almost 500m since then.

It is currently stationed just short of a point called Glenelg, where satellite images have revealed a juxtaposition of three different types of terrain.

Scientists expect this location to be a good starting point to begin characterising the geology of Gale.

The mission is going through something of a lull presently while the rover spends a few days preparing its sample handling system.

It is running dirt through this equipment to scrub surfaces free of any residual contamination from Earth.

This is necessary to avoid skewing the analyses of rock and soil samples delivered to the rover's onboard laboratories later in the mission.

Curiosity's goal is to try to determine if Gale ever supported environments that might have allowed microbial life to flourish.

In the short time it has been on the ground, it has already identified rocks that were clearly deposited in fast running water. The theory is that the rover is sitting at the head of an ancient alluvial fan where a network of streams cut across the crater floor billions of years ago.

• (A) Curiosity will trundle around its landing site looking for interesting rock features to study. Its top speed is about 4cm/s
• (B) This mission has 17 cameras. They will identify particular targets, and a laser will zap those rocks to probe their chemistry
• (C) If the signal is significant, Curiosity will swing over instruments on its arm for close-up investigation. These include a microscope
• (D) Samples drilled from rock, or scooped from the soil, can be delivered to two hi-tech analysis labs inside the rover body
• (E) The results are sent to Earth through antennas on the rover deck. Return commands tell the rover where it should drive next
