SkyDrive.com gets a slew of photo and sharing upgrades

SkyDrivecom gets a slew of photo and sharing upgrades

Just about a week after rolling out offline file access, Microsoft's file hosting service is getting a number of updates. This time the features are rolling out to SkyDrive.com, starting with support for devices with high DPI. The site will detect and match photos and thumbnails to the resolution of your display. Also on the docket is photo rotation and the ever-important ability to view animated GIFs in their full stop motion glory. There are also a couple of updates on the sharing side of things, including the ability to share individual groups of files from anywhere in your account, while a new shared view shows files you've shared at the top and stuff that's shared with you below. Oh, and when you send someone a document now, recipients can edit it without having to sign in. All of those upgrades and more can be checked out in further detail at the source link below.

Open thread: Steve King says GOP congressmen privately share his views

Rep. Steve King (R-Cantoulopia):

My colleagues are standing by me. They come up to me constantly. [...] Can they come and tell me "I know you're right, I support you"? They can do that privately.
You know, this is maybe the first thing Steve King has ever said that he won't have to convince me isn't a product of his imagination. (Load) (Load) (Load) (Load) (Load) (Load) (Load)

Protests hit Tunisia for second day after assassination

By Tarek Amara

TUNIS (Reuters) - Demonstrations swept Tunisia for a second day on Friday after the assassination of a secular opposition figure, with one protester killed and several injured in the southern city of Gafsa, witnesses said.

Late on Friday, 42 opposition members announced their resignation from the 217-seat Constituent Assembly to protest the killing on Thursday of Mohamed Brahmi, a member of the Arab nationalist Popular Front party.

Khamis Kssila of the Nida Touns party told a news conference the departing members would begin a sit-in to demand the dissolution of the assembly and formation of a national salvation government, ideas rejected by Prime Minister Ali Larayedh.

The assembly, controlled by Islamists, is in charge of drafting a new constitution for the North African nation of 11 million people.

Divisions between Islamists and their secular opponents have deepened since Tunisian President Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali was toppled in 2011 in the first of the Arab Spring revolutions.

Two witnesses told Reuters that anti-government protester Mofti Mohamed died during protests in Gafsa on Friday night. There were conflicting accounts of how he died.

There were also several people injured in Gafsa from teargas, witnesses said.

It was the first such death since protests erupted after Brahmi was shot 14 times, in the second killing of a secular politician in Tunisia this year.

Brahmi's family said his funeral would take place at 0800 GMT on Saturday.

Several thousand Islamists took to the streets of Tunis on Friday to defend the government from popular demands that it resign over the assassination of Brahmi.

Interior Minister Lotfi Ben Jeddou drew a direct link between the latest killing and the assassination of the Popular Front's leader, Chokri Belaid, on February 6, that stoked violent protests.

Aiming suspicion at a hardline Islamist, the minister said the same gun had been used in Thursday's killing as in the Belaid assassination.

"The same 9mm automatic weapon that killed Belaid also killed Brahmi," he told a news conference, naming the main suspect as Salafist Boubacar Hakim, already being sought on suspicion of smuggling weapons from Libya.

Authorities have identified 14 Salafists suspected of involvement in Belaid's assassination, and most were believed to be members of the local hardline Islamist group Ansar al-Sharia, he said.

DUELING PROTESTS

Islamists and secular opponents staged rival protests over the future of Tunisia's Ennahda government,

"The people want Ennahda again!" and "No to a coup against democracy!" the Islamists chanted, rejecting demands for a new government of national unity.

Thousands of anti-government protesters also massed in the capital on Friday, while shops and banks closed their doors and all flights in and out of the country were canceled.

"Down with the rule of the Muslim Brotherhood," the secular protesters chanted, referring to the ruling Ennahda party, which draws inspiration from the Brotherhood, a pan-Arab Islamist movement.

Evening protests also erupted in the cities of Kairaouan and Kef, where police fired teargas to disperse protesters.

Brahmi, 58, was a critic of the Ennahda-led ruling coalition and a member of the Constituent Assembly.

The Tunis stock exchange fell by 1.9 percent on Friday morning and the dinar currency was trading close to a record low against the euro.

ARAB WORLD

Tunisia's political transition since the revolt that toppled Ben Ali has been relatively peaceful, with the moderate Islamist Ennahda party sharing power with smaller secular parties.

But the government has struggled to revive the economy and has come under fire from secularists who accuse it of failing to curb the activities of Salafi Islamists.

Events in Egypt, where the army overthrew Muslim Brotherhood President Mohamed Mursi on July 3 after mass protests against him, have further energized the anti-Islamist opposition in Tunisia.

The government announced a day of national mourning on Friday, and radio stations broadcast patriotic songs.

Thousands also protested peacefully on Friday against the government in the cities of Sfax, Kairouan, Monastir and Sidi Bouzid, the cradle of the Tunisian revolution, where protesters set fire to two Ennahda party offices the previous day.

Ben Ali's downfall unleashed unrest across the Arab world, unseating rulers in Egypt, Libya and Yemen, and leading to civil war in Syria.

Rached Ghannouchi, the Ennahda party leader, said the attack on Brahmi was aimed at "halting Tunisia's democratic process and killing the only successful model in the region, especially after the violence in Egypt, Syria and Libya".

The assassination occurred as the country prepares to vote in the next few weeks on the new constitution before a presidential election later in the year.

The turmoil dealt another blow to efforts to revive Tunisia's vital tourism industry. Cultural events, including the Carthage Festival, were suspended following Brahmi's killing.

Microsoft Introduces UK Child Abuse Warning

Microsoft has introduced the UK?s first pop-up facility activated by anyone searching the Internet for child abuse images.

The Bing notification platform is intended to help stop anyone who may be drifting towards finding illegal content on the Internet through search engines.

When a search term is typed into Bing which indicates users are interested in child abuse images, an on-screen notification will be activated.

Bing introduces child abuse warning
Warning: the screen that will greet users who search for abuse images

As well as warning users that child abuse images are illegal, the pop-up will link to the Stopitnow.org website which provides counselling for people addicted to looking at abuse images.

In a statement, Microsoft said: "Microsoft remain a strong proponent of proactive action by the technology industry in the fight against child exploitation.?

"The Bing Notification Platform is just one way Microsoft is working to tackle the scourge of online child abuse content.

David Cameron
David Cameron has threatened tough new laws on internet service providers

"In addition, we have teams dedicated globally to abuse reporting on our services and the development of new innovations to combat child exploitation more broadly".

The Bing Notification Platform is triggered by search terms on a list provided by the The Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (CEOP), Microsoft said.

Andy Baker, CEOP's deputy chief executive, welcomed the creation of the device but said it was the first step towards blocking access to the illegal images and videos, and protect children.

He called on the industry to "take ownership" of the problem.

"While the Bing project isn't the whole solution, I hope it goes some way to making those who are curious about searching for indecent images think again," he said.

Research by Experian last December showed that Bing had a 4.99% share of the UK search engine market, which is dominated by Google and its 88.3% market share.

Microsoft's PhotoDNA technology is already widely used by Internet service providers and police to help prevent the proliferation of "some of the worst" illegal images online and to identify and rescue victims.

The move comes after David Cameron this week threatened to impose tough new laws on internet giants if they fail to blacklist key search terms for abuse images by October as part a crackdown on online porn.

Syrian refugees in Lebanon face suspicion

BEIRUT (AP) ? They're lightweight, easy to assemble and have covers that are supposed to keep you cool in the summer and warm in the winter. The U.N. refugee agency wants to test these individual housing units with an eye toward using them as shelter for Syrians fleeing their country's civil war.

But the plan is meeting stiff resistance from Lebanese officials, who fear that elevating living conditions for Syrian refugees ever so slightly will discourage them from returning home once the fighting ends. That frustrates aid organizations who are desperately trying to manage the massive refugee presence across the country.

Lebanon's refusal to set up any kind of organized accommodation for tens of thousands of Syrians ? including refugee camps or government-sanctioned tent sites ? is a reflection of its own civil war demons. It underlines the nation's deep seated fear of a repeat of the 1975-1990 war, for which many Lebanese at least partly blame Palestinian refugees.

Many regard the Syrians with suspicion and are worried that the refugees, most of them Sunni Muslims, would stay in the country permanently, upsetting Lebanon's delicate sectarian balance and re-igniting the country's explosive mix of Christian and Muslim sects.

"It's the fear of everything permanent, or semi-permanent, because of the Palestinian experience in Lebanon," said Makram Maleeb, a program manager for a Syrian refugee crisis unit at Lebanon's Ministry for Social Affairs.

"Any move toward a camp situation is quite worrisome because it suggests a permanent situation for the refugees," he told The Associated Press.

Palestinians living in Arab countries ? including the 450,000 in Lebanon ? are descendants of the hundreds of thousands who fled or were driven from their homes in the war that followed Israel's creation in 1948. They remain in Lebanon's 12 refugee camps because Israel and the Palestinians have never reached a deal that would enable them to return to their homes that are now in Israel.

The civil war in Syria, now in its third year, has killed more than 100,000 people and uprooted millions from their homes. Many fled to Iraq, Turkey, Jordan and Lebanon, a short drive away from the capital, Damascus.

On any given day in Lebanon, hundreds, sometimes thousands, of refugees arrive in cars loaded with children and belongings. Their presence has swelled the country's population of 4.5 million by a fifth. It's an astounding statistic for the tiny country and represents the highest number of refugees per capita of any country in the region.

Officials say an estimated 1.2 million Syrians are now in Lebanon ? including some 620,000 registered refugees. Most arrived over the past eight months.

With the government providing none of the facilities and land that authorities in Turkey, Jordan and Iraq have allocated for the refugees, many Syrians in Lebanon live in appalling conditions, finding shelter in slums, tents and tin shacks strung with laundry lines and wedged between farm lands outside towns and cities.

On a casual walk in Beirut, one finds Syrians sheltering in underground parking lots, under bridges and old construction sites with no running water, sanitation, electricity or protection from Lebanon's sizzling summers and its freezing winters.

"The kids get sick all the time here," said Raghda, a 48-year-old mother of eight, living in an abandoned police station in the eastern Lebanese town of Majdal Anjar, along with 21 other relatives. They are crammed into three rooms without proper sanitation or clean water.

About 10 percent of the refugees are accommodated in unfinished private houses, and others live in garages, shops and collective shelters, according to the UNHCR. Most of them ? over 80 percent ? rent accommodation that costs more than $200 a month on average.

Lebanese officials say they are aware of the magnitude of the crisis, the health risks involved and the possibility that deepening resentment of refugees among the hosting population could turn into an armed conflict inside Lebanon as the civil war drags on in Syria.

Still, they insist the government will not approve any plans for setting up refugee camps or sanction erecting any kind of structure specifically designed to accommodate refugee families on Lebanese soil no matter who designs it and who pays for it.

"It's distressing and everyone is feeling anxious, wondering if they will ever go back as the fighting goes on and on and on," Maleeb said.

Still, he said it was unlikely the housing unit would be approved.

Ninette Kelley, UNHCR representative in Lebanon, said the refugees "desperately want to return home." But having people live in appalling conditions will not force them out of Lebanon before the fighting stops in Syria, she said.

"'There is this psychological worry that if people are put in a semi-permanent structure, they will never leave," Kelley told the AP. They will leave, she said, adding that one of the greatest impediments of going home after the fighting ends is not having a place to live in Syria.

The 17.5-square-meter (yard) refugee housing unit would offer a family of five a "more dignified life in exile," said Kamel Deriche, UNHCR's operations manager in Lebanon, and enables refugees to dismantle it, pack it and carry it home to reuse as a temporary accommodation until their family home is rebuilt.

Compared to a tent, which has to be replaced every three to four years, the unit's life span is expected to be up to seven years. And the price of about $1,000 per unit makes it more economical, Deriche said.

"It's not a permanent structure and we are not establishing camps by any stretch of the imagination," Kelley said, adding that the unit would be only one of several shelter options for the agency to use.

A prototype of the prefabricated house designed by the Swedish furniture manufacturer IKEA has been sitting in the front yard of UNHCR's Beirut headquarters for a month.

The agency has been lobbying Lebanese officials for permission to try out 15 units over a period of six months before they can be deployed, but so far to no avail. UNHCR also intends to test the units in climate conditions of northern Iraq and in Ethiopia, Deriche said.

Lebanese officials say the historic connotation of a tent for refugees, let alone a housing unit, weighs heavy on the nation that is still reeling from the devastating 15-year civil war. The Syrian fighting has frequently spilled over into Lebanon over the past two years, deepening tensions between pro- and anti-Syrian politicians, who have been unable to form a new government since the prime minister resigned in March.

"There will be no camps and family shelters, wooden or pre-fabricated, whatsoever in Lebanon," said Maleeb, the government official.

Anything to do with the Syrian refugees, he added, is "a big political decision, and one that cannot be taken by a caretaker government."

'Sister Wives' daughter wants a plural marriage

TV

"Sister Wives" patriarch Kody Brown recently told TODAY.com that he realizes that plural marriage isn't for everyone ? and that it might not even be right for all of his kids.

"We are not pushing it on other people," he said. "We don?t even push it on our children."

Still, at least one of the family's 17 children has embraced the lifestyle. Mariah's decision to one day follow that particular tenet of their fundamentalist Mormon faith is part of the focus of the next episode of the TLC series.

"Kody's always said that you should not live plural marriage unless you feel the call to it ? you don't just do it just to try it out," first wife Meri, Mariah's mother, explained in sneak peek exclusive to TODAY.com. "I completely agree with him on that. And I think that Mariah has had that calling. She just feels that."

But Mariah wants to make sure no one is confused about what that calling means to her.

"There's a stereotype that polygamous women don't go to college and don't get an education," the 17-year-old said in the clip. "That's not me, because I want an education and I want to become a doctor ? but I also want to live plural marriage."

Mariah's sister Mykelti (daughter of Kody and his third wife, Christine) imagines that Mariah will eventually have "four wives and 23 children." Another sister (Aspyn, Christine's oldest child) seemed taken aback by the thought of Mariah having so many kids, but for Madison (Kody's oldest daughter with second wife, Janelle), the problem had more to do with the number of wives.

"Four?!" she exclaimed.

Of course, it's no surprised that would be a sticking point for Madison. Last season, she made it clear that plural marriage wasn't for her.

"I would not be able to share my husband like that," she insisted.

See what else Kody's kids have to say about the subject when "Sister Wives" airs Sunday at 9 p.m. on TLC.

Reese Witherspoon to star in 'Wild' for Fox Searchlight

By Lucas Shaw

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) - Fox Searchlight has acquired worldwide distribution rights to "Wild," the upcoming adaptation of Cheryl Strayed best-selling memoir that will star Reese Witherspoon, the studio announced on Tuesday.

Witherspoon is producing the project through her Fox-based Pacific Standard with partner Bruna Panadrea and River Road Entertainment's Bill Pohlad ("The Tree of Life").

Nick Hornby ("High Fidelity," "An Education") adapted Strayed's New York Times best-seller, which details Strayed's journey along the Pacific Crest Trail after the dissolution of her marriage and death of her mother. The studio will now search for a director and aims to begin production in the fall.

"We have long been huge fans of this visceral, inspirational and moving personal story with such a strong female perspective," Fox Searchlight presidents Stephen Gilula and Nancy Utley said in a statement. "It has been a dream of the studio to work with Reese Witherspoon and we are thrilled to be partnered with her, Bruna Papandrea, Bill Pohlad and Nick Hornby."

Witherspoon recently wrapped Imagine Entertainment's "The Good Lie" and is currently filming Paul Thomas Anderson's "Inherent Vice." She is attached to star in "Passengers," a long-gestating project that would also star Keanu Reeves.

It remains to be seen if this film will impact Witherspoon's involvement in that project.

Witherspoon praised Fox Searchlight as "an extraordinary company that continually strives to bring original, inspirational films to the marketplace" and said she was "thrilled to collaborate with them on 'Wild.'"

20 children die after eating school lunch in India

At least 20 children have died and more are sick after eating free meals at a primary school in eastern India, an official said Wednesday.

Bihar state official Abhijit Sinha said another 27 children and the school cook have been hospitalized in Patna, the state capital. Ten of them are in serious condition. The children are age 8 to 11.

They fell ill soon after eating meals in the school on Tuesday in Masrakh, a village 80 kilometers (50 miles) north of Patna. They were rushed to a local hospital and later to the state capital for treatment, Sinha said

The meal was cooked in the school kitchen, but school authorities stopped serving the meal as children started vomiting.

P.K. Sahi, the state education minister, said a preliminary investigation suggests the food had traces of an organophosphate used as an insecticide on rice and wheat crops. It's believed the food was not washed before it was served at the school.

Many state governments in India have launched midday meal programs for poor children. Malnutrition is one of the major health concerns among Indian children.

Bihar state Chief Minister Nitish Kumar ordered an inquiry.

Authorities have suspended a food inspector and registered a case of criminal negligence against the school headmaster.

At least six people are dead and more than 20 are injured after a train crash in the Paris suburb of Bretigny-sur-Orge on Friday afternoon.

Michel Fuzeau, prefect of the Essone region where the crash took place, told reporters at the scene he feared the number of casualties could rise as rescue workers responded on Friday.

"At this time there are six people dead," French President Francois Hollande said at the scene. "There are 22 seriously injured, one who is in critical condition. And then there many lightly injured people who are already being treated."

Hollande added: "I also want to express my solidarity to the families of those hurt. It is going to take a long time to identify all the victims, the investigations have begun, and as soon as it is possible we will contact the families and give out the names, but I understand the apprehension and the pain. My thoughts are with them. "?

The country?s interior minister put the toll higher in the crash?s immediate aftermath, telling The Associated Press that as many as seven people were thought to be dead.

A photograph taken from social media and posted on the website of French newspaper Le Parisien showed a smashed train car alongside the train station platform in Bretigny-sur-Orge, some 12 miles outside the French capital.

At least six people have died after a train crash outside Paris.

?Most of the people who suffered minor injuries have been taken care of,? local politician Michel Pouzol said, according to Reuters. ?We are going to have to empty the carriages completely to see if there are victims or not.?

An official for France's national railway company, SNCF, told the AP that the train was carrying 385 passengers when the train derailed and four cars piled up while traveling from Paris to Limoges at around 5:15 pm local time.

Guillaume Pepy, chairman of the SNCF,?said the derailment occurred at the point of changing tracks. The train was entering at high speed because it was not supposed to stop at that station, he said.

Pepy praised the train conductor, who he said was able to stop the train before it crashed into another one on the same track.?

Most of those injured are believed to have been evacuated, but a further search may reveal more, Pepy told journalists.

Four of the six train cars are severely damaged.?

France's transport minister was heading to the crash scene, the AP reported.

NBC News? Alastair Jamieson and Becky Bratu contributed to this report.
