Company goes to the dogs, to fight foul breath

Here's a story about a personal hygiene startup with a sense of humor, which may have figured out the way to big profits is through a dog's mouth.

Orabrush sells tongue brushes for humans using an unappealing mascot called Morgan the Talking Tongue. He's both creepy and hilarious.

The company said most bacteria that causes bad breath is on the tongue, not in the teeth. Tongue scraping is a common practice in other parts of the world, but Orabrush CEO Jeff Davis admits it's been a bit of a tough sell in the U.S. "We still have some work to do."

So the company is going to the dogs.

Read More: San Francisco's Puppy Problem

After customers suggested Orabrush create a tongue cleaner for dogs, the company started a crowdfunding page on IndieGogo to build awareness, gauge interest, and take pre-orders for what they called the Orapup.

"We had a target raise of $40,000," said Davis. "We were up for 60 days, and earned $60,000, exceeding our target. But most importantly we knew we had consumer demand and high interest from passionate dog owners."

That was last fall. It took several months for company founder Dr. Bob Wagstaff to perfect the Orapup brush and the syrupy paste, which kills bacteria. He needed to make sure the product would be easy to use and enjoyable for dogs.

How does it work? You don't have to put anything into the dog's mouth. Instead, dog owners squeeze a small bit of paste onto the large brush with short bristles, and then dogs voluntarily licks it for at least a minute.

"It takes what was a disastrous kind of frustrating experience for pet owners to try to clean their mouth and it's like a treat," CEO Davis said. The paste tastes like beef and bacon. "I've tried it myself," he added, "and it's not too bad."

Six months later, the Orapup has launched with $750,000 in pre-orders. Davis was gushing about it to me. "I have to tell you, if you get a chance to use it Jane, it's an incredible bonding experience with your pet."

Really?

I decided to try the Orapup on my two dogs, Eeyore and Princess Leia. Being basset hounds, they have terrible breath. Terrible. Ter. I. Bull.

In the video, you'll see how it went. Eeyore was a little reluctant at first before going to town licking the brush. Leia jumped right in. One day later, their breath no longer triggers nausea, though they don't exactly smell of minty freshness.

Davis said Orabrush is considering developing tongue brushes for other domesticated animals. The company thinks pet products may be more profitable than tongue brushes for humans. "Based on Orapup's metrics today, on our online e-commerce model, Orapup will probably be bigger."

The CEO came to Orabrush after 23 years at Proctor & Gamble, and he said he had to learn to do everything in reverse. Instead of making a product and testing it before launch, Orabrush gets suggestions and feedback from consumers first, then builds a brand and takes pre-orders online before a product is manufactured. Its entire business model is built around social media.

"We are one of the top subscribed sponsored, branded channels on YouTube. I always say I like being sixth or seventh in this crowd because we have brands like Apple, OldSpice, GoPro, RedBull, Pixar, Disney ? these are incredibly iconic branded names," Davis said.

He believes Orabrush could eventually be acquired. "I would expect someone would want to take us to the next level."

But for the moment, the company is focused on building the brand and making new products, in that order. "Proctor & Gamble taught me a lot about strategy and discipline, and in the startups and smaller companies, it's a little bit about creativity and chaos."

Attic Ventilators - Air Concepts HVAC Services

Attic VentilatorIn several regions of the United States, powered attic ventilators enjoy the pleasures of a positive reputation. They are promoted by builders, shingle manufactures, roofers, HVAC contractors, utilities, weekender material retailers, ventilation manufactures, consultants and others. Extending shingle life, protecting shingle warrantee, removing moisture from attics and reducing the air conditioning load by the removal of attic heat are their believed benefits. These regional cultures accept and sometimes expect the use of powered attic ventilators. Cash flow in their regional economic systems is saturated with their use. Those who manufacture sell or install powered attic ventilators in these regional cultures could experience financial hardships should it be suggested that powered roof ventilators should not be used. However, that is our central theme as a result of our measurements of some of their unplanned impacts on houses.

A review of some of the important issues Attic Ventilator?s & the problems they can cause in your home includes the following:

  1. Ventilators can cause negative pressures in combustion appliance zones. By themselves or in conjunction with other negative pressures they can cause backdrafting.
  2. Ventilators run during electric utilities peak demand period and can become a peak demand problem.
  3. Ventilators can draw conditioned air out of houses and cause the air conditioner to run more.
    1. They can cause increased latent load that air conditioners must remove.
    2. They can increase the cost for air conditioning for the homeowner.
    3. They can cause temperature discomfort, hot areas, which homeowners try to solve by increasing cooling through closing some supply registers which can cause additional problems.
  4. Ventilators can be an unexpected and undocumented source of increased infiltration rates in houses.
  5. If a powered ventilator is used, more energy will be consumed by the motor than will be saved on the air conditioning bill.
  6. It has been proven that when attic ventilation was increased it did not necessarily reduce the transfer of heat across the ceiling insulation into the house.
  7. It was proven by research and field testing that by running Attic Ventilator?s in climates with seasonal environments changes; that when the outside humidity (moisture) & temperature is high you introducing moisture back into your home, attic areas and crawlspaces.
  8. Ventilators can cause your home to draw into negative pressures, increasing your overall energy usage.

What really happens is that when that power attic ventilator runs, it?s going to pull air from wherever it can find it. Since air takes the path of least resistance, some of it will most likely be coming from the conditioned space in your home. So basically what you?re doing is air conditioning your attic. The longer the fan runs the more conditioned air it pulls into the attic.

If you have a perfectly air-sealed ceiling, you?re not going to have this problem, of course. The reality, however, is that few ceilings are leak-free. Since air needs only a pressure difference and a pathway to move, and your ceiling probably has plenty of pathways, it?s best not to enhance any pressure differences that will increase air movement into or out of your home. Air sealing & tighten is key along with changing the overall environmental conditions. With properly sized dehumidifiers you can remove the moisture and condition your space keeping it nice and dry without bringing high humid air moisture back in.

In other words, don?t install that power attic ventilator. If you have some installed already, disable them so they never run.

Power attic ventilators can cause problems even without air conditioning. One potential problem would be sucking moist, moldy air up from the crawl space into the house.

Another would be backdrafting a water heater and putting carbon monoxide in the house. These are real problems from real houses that have really happened.

The first step before investing in an Attic Ventilator is to have your home properly assisted by a certified Home Energy Auditor to see at a minimum, if you are a good candidate. Don?t be fooled by fast talking salesman that hide the truth when it comes to the negative issues attic ventilators can cause to your home.? It is Key that you have the whole house approach before jumping to this so called quick fix. Having a Home Energy Audit, Blower door Test & Duct Testing can be some methods to properly examine & resolve your homes infiltration issues. By locating infiltration and improving the tightness in your home you can increase your comfort and save on your overall energy consumption. ?It is recommended that if a powered attic ventilator is chosen as part of an attic ventilation strategy, the following guidelines should be provided. Make sure you are a good candidate. The installer should provide a good air barrier between the house and the attic and adequate, net free, vent area should be provided. Confirmation of safe operation is provided by measuring not by ignoring, guessing, or hoping.

FBI agent describes cannibal talk at NY trial

In this courthouse sketch, Gilbert Valle, reacts during his trial in federal court Monday, Feb. 25, 2013, in New York. Struggling to stay composed, the estranged wife of a New York City police officer testified Monday that she was shocked to find he had visited a website featuring a photo of a dead woman and other gruesome images ? a discovery that led to a federal prosecution accusing him of plotting to abduct, torture and eat dozens of women. In this courtroom sketch, Gilberto Valle is seen in federal court in New York, Monday, Feb 25, 2013. The wife of Valle, a New York City police officer, will testify at a federal trial to explain how she discovered that he was discussing kidnapping, killing and eating women. (AP Photo/Elizabeth Williams)

This undated photo submitted into evidence by Assistant Federal Defender Julia L. Gatto shows Gilberto Valle with his daughter. Valle is accused of conspiracy to kidnap a woman and unauthorized use of a law enforcement database that prosecutors say he used to help build a list of potential targets. Gatto tried to soften the image of her client by showing jurors pictures of a uniformed Valle and the couple?s 1-year-old daughter, a moment that caused the wife on the witness stand and eventually the officer at the defense table 30 feet away to cry out amid sobs. (AP Photo/Assistant Federal Defender Julia L. Gatto)

(AP) ? Cheerful written exchanges between a police officer and women from his past appeared in a sinister new light when an FBI agent described at the officer's criminal trial how he talked on the Internet about killing and eating the women.

"I'm dying to taste some girl meat," Agent Corey Walsh testified Tuesday that New York Police Officer Gilberto Valle told one of the online friends he met who shared an appetite for human flesh.

The testimony came on the second day of testimony in federal court in Manhattan for the 28-year-old Queens resident charged with conspiring to kidnap women and illegally accessing a government database to research potential victims. If convicted, he could face life in prison.

It came a day after his 27-year-old wife told jurors she fled their home in September with their 1-year-old daughter after discovering that Valle spent hours a night on extreme sexually violent web sites and one that catered to those interested in cannibalism and asphyxiation. In Reno, Nev., she turned over a computer to the FBI that contained hundreds of Valle's emails and instant messages with what the government has described as co-conspirators.

To prove the plots involved real women and to counter defense claims that it was all fantasy, the government summoned several women to testify about their dealings with Valle before prosecutors say he wrote about them as potential targets and, in two cases, potential meals.

The women included a former high school classmate, two former college classmates and an 18-year-old woman who attended Valle's high school alma mater and said she had no contact with him before he described her to one of his Internet friends as "the most desirable piece of meat I've ever met" and small enough to fit in his oven.

Kimberly Sauer, of Germantown, Md., went to the University of Maryland with Valle and had nothing bad to say about her former classmate. On cross-examination, Sauer told defense attorney Julia Gatto that she never felt threatened by Valle.

Sauer learned of the case only after she received from Valle's wife last year in the middle of the night a disturbing Facebook message that sounded so crazy that she texted him to warn that the account must have been hacked. Either that "or you're trying to sell me into white slavery," she recalled joking in the text.

But Walsh said Valle's computer had a file titled "Abducting and Cooking Kimberly: A Blueprint," which included a photo of Sauer.

Sauer came up frequently as a subject in online chats between Valle and a man in Great Britain who used Moody Blues as a screen name and MeatMarketMan as part of his email address, the agent testified. Walsh said Moody Blues told Valle he had fantasized about cannibalism since he was 6 years old but did not fulfill the desire until 35 years later.

In one correspondence, Valle suggests a woman named Kimberly ? prosecutors say Sauer ? would be easy prey because she lived alone.

"I can knock her out, wait until dark and kidnap her right out of her house," he wrote, according to prosecutors.

The agent said Moody Blues suggested eating their victim alive but Valle responded: "I'm not really into raw meat."

Walsh said they also discussed cooking Sauer, basted in olive oil, over an open fire and using her severed head as a centerpiece for a sit-down meal.

"I just can't wait to get Kimberly cooking," the agent quoted Valle as saying.

In a chat, Valle told Moody Blues he was meeting Kimberly for lunch on Sunday and that she would be "kidnapped in a couple of months."

Moody Blues told him he'd "given thought to your ideas about cooking her alive."

"Give me some ideas," Valle said.

Moody Blues suggested "cutting her feet off and cooking them on the BBQ in front of her."

"I suppose that's a possibility," Valle said. "You are the one with the experience."

Walsh also described communications between Valle and his co-defendant, Michael Vanhise, of Trenton, N.J. He said the two negotiated the price to be paid for a Manhattan teacher to be taken to New Jersey in a suitcase for Vanhise to rape and kill.

The agent said Valle asked Vanhise whether he wanted the woman clothed or naked and Vanhise said he wanted her clothed.

"Excellent. I'll leave her clothes on. I'll give you the pleasure of unwrapping your gift," Valle was quoted as saying.

Vanhise, like Valle, has pleaded not guilty. His lawyers also say he engaged only in Internet fantasy chats.

The government hasn't said what role Moody Blues played in the investigation.

Fitness And Dental Health! | Gain Quick: Gain & Build Muscle with ...

The link between dental health and fitness may not seem obvious, but your oral health actually has much more of a bearing on your general health than you may think.? There is a growing body of evidence to support a link between dental health and general health, meaning that looking after your teeth and gums have never been more important.

How does oral health affect fitness?

Oral health does not directly affect fitness levels but it does affect your health, and if you are not in good health you may struggle to train properly, which will influence your fitness level.? The most common photo dentalhealth_zps977eb8e9.jpgcauses of oral health issues, such as gum disease and tooth decay, is poor oral hygiene.? Studies have shown that poor oral health also increases your risk of medical illnesses, many of which are very serious.

Oral health and general health

Studies have suggested a link between gum disease and heart disease, which has a huge bearing on exercise and fitness.? The heart needs to be working efficiently to pump blood around the body when you are exercising.? If your heart isn?t working properly your muscles will become tired due to a lack of oxygen, you may feel faint and you may suffer even more serious consequences.? Brushing up on oral hygiene in addition to exercising and eating well will help to keep your heart ticking over and enable you to train as hard as you want to.

Gum disease has also been linked to diabetes, another condition which can be problematic for fitness fanatics, as hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) and hyperglycemia (high blood sugar) both affect the body?s ability to function properly.? Low blood sugar is particularly dangerous for sport enthusiasts and may cause dizziness, confusion and fainting.

How can I prevent dental health problems?

The good news is that oral health problems are largely preventable and you don?t need to dedicate a lot of time to achieving good oral health.? Here are some tips for keeping dental illnesses at bay?so that you can?train hard:

  • Brush your teeth twice a day using fluoride toothpaste.
  • Brush for at least two minutes each time and cover each quadrant of your mouth.
  • Use an electric toothbrush for best results.
  • Floss on a regular basis.
  • Visit your dentist every 6 months for a routine check-up.
  • See your dentist if you experience symptoms of gum disease or decay, including tooth pain, bleeding gums, sore and swollen gums.
  • Avoid snacking on sugary foods and drinking sugary drinks on a regular basis.

Your general health is really important for fitness.? If you don?t feel well or you have an injury or an illness, this can affect your ability to train and you will be less fit.? By sticking to a good oral hygiene routine, keeping an eye on your diet and going for regular check-ups, you can help to keep your body in tip-top shape so that you can enjoy life.

The Engadget Interview: Qualcomm's Raj Talluri talks Snapdragon at MWC 2013

The Engadget Interview Qualcomm's Raj Talluri talks Snapdragon at MWC 2013

Qualcomm finally detailed its Snapdragon 200 and 400 processors here at MWC, and we got the opportunity to discuss the new chips with Raj Talluri, SVP of product management. While the Snapdragon 600 and 800 SoCs are geared towards high-end devices, the 200 and 400 are targeting sub-$100 and $200-300 phones. He explained that the software remains as close as possible to what's available on the 600 and 800, but the hardware is scaled down to support lower-resolution displays and cameras by using ARM cores instead of the company's own Krait architecture. We then talked about the Snapdragon 800, which was decoding 4K video at CES but is being showcased here in Barcelona handling 4K playback with Dolby and DTS in Qualcomm's movie theater (sans popcorn, sadly). He also mentioned some of the other demos at the company's booth -- 4K encoding and streaming (via TransferJet), realtime video editing, voice activation, games (Modern Combat 4 and Need For Speed) and more. Don't miss our video interview after the break.

imgZine brings real-time communications platform to the U.S. ...

imgZine (pronounced ?imagine?), a Dutch app development company, today announced the U.S. launch of its real-time social publishing platform for mobile devices. Ideal for commercial publishers as well as internal and external communication programs for enterprises, imgZine offers a complete customizable app development platform, from concept to launch, including design, content management and app store placement, as well as all the necessary iOS and Android approval processes.

imgZine has spent the last 18 months fine-tuning the product since its launch in the Netherlands in August 2011. During that period, imgZine completed more than 30 apps for commercial publishing companies, large enterprises and the Dutch government. Most recently, imgZine produced a novel publishing app for DNP (De Nieuwe Pers), offering the world?s first digital newspaper that enables subscriptions to individual journalists. Earlier this month, imgZine also launched an externally targeted app for RaboBank, one of the largest banks in the Netherlands. This was the third app developed for RaboBank, who have adopted the platform for internal and external communication programs.

?Having spent our first year working with a few early adopters, we now have a fully optimized product and development process. With a proven product and an established European customer base, the timing is right to bring the benefits of our technology to the U.S. market,? stated Bert Kok, founder and president of imgZine. ?The key to our technology is engagement. Whether you?re a publisher providing relevant content to your readers, or you?re an enterprise communicating with your internal and external audiences, the content needs to be delivered in an engaging fashion. We have a platform that presents your content in real-time and in an interactive environment, keeping your audiences engaged at all times.?

Described as a white label Flipboard or Zite, imgZine?s platform requires no extra content creation, IT or design support and offers secure connections into private intranet networks to share sensitive information to employees in real-time. The technology leverages open APIs and web standards to push content in real-time to customized apps on smartphones and tablets running iOS, Android and Windows operating systems. Content channels can also be personalized by the user and are fully integrated with social media platforms.

Publishers in the Netherlands have been amongst the early adopters as the platform offers newspapers and magazines many unique and innovative features to help commercial publishers transitioning into the digital age. As with DNP?s novel publishing app, the platform allows readers to subscribe to individual journalists behind a paywall, creating potential new revenue streams for publishers while giving readers more control, selecting the content they want. In addition, publishers can incorporate full-page advertisements, which have significantly higher click-through rates than web-based or banner advertisements.

?While the real-time mobile publishing aspect of the platform shows obvious returns to newspapers and magazines, we believe the real opportunity lies in our ability to facilitate secure, customizable internal and external enterprise communications to engage and educate different communities with exceptional control. Our timing couldn?t be better. The self-publishing model is gaining rapid momentum and we?re extremely well-positioned with a fast, cost-effective and engaging platform,? concluded Kok.

imgZine has partnered with San Francisco-based media agency Impress Labs to facilitate the launch and U.S. sales of the imgZine platform. Both companies will be co-located at 811 Sansome Street, San Francisco, CA 94111. For further information please contact usa@imgzine.com or call 415-395-0941.?

AMD Temash chips promise proper tablet gaming - hands-on ...

AMD was showing off a selection of prototype tablets at MWC containing its new "Temash" tablet processors.

The chips are designed to bring proper application and gaming performance to Windows 8 tablets, while still being able to be passively-cooled and have low power consumption.

We were highly impressed with the AMD Trinity mobile processors, which combined strong gaming performance with long battery life, so we had few doubts AMD could pull off the same trick with its tablet chips.

AMD Temarsh
Modern Action RPG gaming on your Windows 8 tablet is a reality

AMD was demonstrating two prototype Temash-powered tablets at MWC; one dual-core and one quad-core model. AMD stated that both had the same graphics chipset, so any difference in gaming performance will depend on how much a particular title depends on the CPU rather than the graphics chipset.

One quad-core Temash tablet was running the DirectX 11 Torchlight 2 RPG, and it was reasonably smooth; we'd take a guess at between 20 and 25fps, which is enough for action RPGs such as Torchlight, but not for your average twitch-heavy first-person shooter.

AMD had helpfully provided an Intel Atom Z2760-powered Windows 8 tablet for comparative purposes. This was barely managing 5fps ? as with laptop chips, AMD's tablet processors seem to be ahead for games.

Of course, Intel has long held the lead for 2D application performance in laptops. In an attempt to prove that its new chips could cut it away from the land of shaders and bump mapping, AMD had also set up another benchmark, using the Fishbowl HTML5 benchmark. This animates goldfish swimming around a bowl, and keeps adding fish until the device can no longer render the scene at 60fps.

In this test, again side-by-side with an Atom tablet, the AMD tablet had 95 fish swimming around at 60fps, while the Atom tablet only had one, and could only manage 45fps.

AMD Temarsh
Playing Guns 4 Hire on a tablet while watching Sintel. Why? Because we can

AMD had one more trick up its sleeve; it revealed that its tablets will be even faster when plugged into a keyboard dock. When provided with some extra power from the dock, the tablet will be able to ramp up its processor clock speed. AMD even mentioned that some keyboard docks may even have built-in fans to help with cooling, so letting the processors run even faster. When plugged into the dock, the AMD tablet gained another 45 fish.

We were impressed, but the new tablets won't be available until the second half of this year, by which time Intel's new Clover Trail+ patform will be available, with significant performance and graphics improvements. In the meantime, we look forward to getting our hands on our first AMD-powered Windows 8 tablet to put it through our own benchmarks.

Sequester: 'It's your fault....No, your fault!' (+video)

With just five days to go until the sequester's automatic spending cuts kick in, what's Washington doing about it? Not negotiating like responsible adults, but mainly pointing fingers of blame.

By Brad Knickerbocker,?Staff writer / February 24, 2013

President Obama pauses as he speaks about the sequester last week. The White House and congressional Republicans are arguing over who's responsible for the across-the-board spending cuts that could kick in Friday.

Just five days before the ?sequester? and its automatic across-the-board spending cuts kicks in, Washington seems frozen in its inability to deal with what most people think is a terrible way to address the federal deficit ? no apparent negotiations between the Obama administration and congressional Republicans, assigning political blame the main activity.

The finger-pointing began Saturday with President Obama?s weekly radio/web address and the Republican response from Senator John Hoeven of North Dakota.

?Are Republicans in Congress really willing to let these cuts fall on our kids? schools and mental health care just to protect tax loopholes for corporate jet owners?? Obama asked.??Are they really willing to slash military health care and the border patrol just because they refuse to eliminate tax breaks for big oil companies?? Are they seriously prepared to inflict more pain on the middle class because they refuse to ask anything more of those at the very top??These are the questions Republicans in Congress need to ask themselves.?

RECOMMENDED:?Sequester 101: What happens if $85 billion in cuts hit on March 1

Sen. Hoeven countered with, ?Why won?t he work with us? And the answer, quite simply, is because he wants higher taxes.?

?President Obama ? not only wants higher taxes; he?s actually preventing economic growth and private-sector job creation,? he said. ?He is blocking it with more regulation, red tape, and bureaucracy.?

On Sunday, Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood repeated his warning that the sequester could mean bad news for travelers as air traffic controllers were furloughed and some small regional airports shut down.

But Mr. LaHood ? a former congressman from Illinois and the lone Republican in the Obama cabinet ? took a shot at his fellow party members too.

"Well, look it, I'm a Republican,? he said on CNN?s ?State of the Nation.? ?My audience is trying to persuade my former colleagues that they need to come to the table with a proposal, which ... they haven't done. While the president has, the Republicans haven't.?

Over on CBS's "Face the Nation,? Education Secretary Arne Duncan warned of the impact just the threat of sequestration is having on his field.

"There are literally teachers now who are getting pink slips, who are getting notices that they can't come back this fall," Mr. Duncan said

Republicans pushed back against such dire warnings.

?Stop sending out your Cabinet secretaries to scare the American people,? Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal (R) said on NBC?s ?Meet the Press.?

"Shame on Ray LaHood," Sen. John McCain responded when asked about the transportation secretary's shot at Republicans on "State of the Union."

As to who?s responsible for the sequester, Sen. McCain pointed to the most-read item in Sunday?s political news: Bob Woodward?s op-ed piece in the Washington Post.

'Spider Sense' suit trades sight for touch

A student project has resulted in a suit that mimics Spider-Man's famous "spider sense," allowing the wearer to sense obstacles and other people without the benefit of sight. It still has a ways to go, though, so using it to fight crime is not advised.

Victor Mateevisti at the University of Illinois, Chicago decided to investigate whether something like an enhanced sense of one's environment can be created with off-the-shelf sensors and hardware. The answer is: Not quite yet, but we're getting there.

The suit consists of ultrasonic rangefinders placed at various attitudes that feed into a central processor. That processor sends signals to small mechanical arms that put pressure on the body in the general region of the object detected.

The approach is similar to that of the Tacit, a hand-worn "sonar for the blind" that translates distance into pressure, but the SpiderSense suit detects its environment in several directions at once.

So, for example, if a person were to approach someone wearing this suit from behind, the sensor would detect that person when they came in range and pressure would be applied to the user's back. If they came from the left, pressure would be applied on the left.

Experiments with a blindfolded test subject had mixed results. In some situations, such as a simple hallway or open area with pedestrians coming and going, the test subject could accurately detect the direction and distance of obstacles (and even hit them with cardboard throwing stars made for that purpose).

On the other hand, navigating the aisles of the library proved impractical: the narrow corridors and openings didn't produce intelligible information.

Mateevitsi told New Scientist that the goal isn't necessarily a whole suit. A limited version of the system could be used by a bicyclist to be better aware of traffic behind him, for instance.

The results and methodology of the project can be viewed in Mateevitsi's paper (PDF); The findings will also be presented next week at the Augmented Human conference in Stuttgart, Germany.

Art 7 Entertainment: Wood Presents And Folk Russian Painting in Art ...

Originally Khokhloma wood tableware were produced in monasteries and for the czar court only. At that time Khokhloma tableware production was not large scale. It was because of expensive imported tin. In 1720s after the end of the North War tin flow to Russian increased. The price went down and the material came within reach of many masters. The production and the sales of brightly painted hand made art works expanded.

Thus in the XIX century items with khokhloma painting were famous not only in Russia but in Persia, India, Middle East, the USA and Australia as well. The export of khokhloma items grew after the worldwide exhibition in 1889 in Paris.

In 1916 Nizhegorodskoye Zemstvo established the first School for Wood-Working Arts and Crafts in Semyonov. The folk arts and folklore flourished in Volga region near Nizhny Novgorod province. No other territory in Russia could equal it in the number and originality of the folk arts and crafts that had sprang to life and were developed in the local communities. The Khokhloma art painting on wooden tableware is the type of Nizhny Novgorod folk art craft that became most popular in Russia and foreign countries.

The "grass-leaves" decorative ornaments and their peculiar color scheme suggest that the Khokhloma art is rooted in the ancient Russian decorative culture while the imitation of gilt ornaments on wood dates back to the medieval Russian handicraft skills. The painting technique has been somewhat upgraded but remains essentially the same as in the ancient time.

Khokhloma russian painting amazes you with its delicate grass pattern and festive coloring, which is based on combination of scarlet cinnabar and flittering gold against the black lacquer background. This is Khokhloma specific feature. Masters used tin powder and lacquer to obtain such gold color. Now they use aluminum powder.

First, the art tableware are shaped on a lathe from the dried lime wood, which are turned into bowls, vases, mugs, dishes and spoons.

They are dried and covered with red and brown primer, so that they start looking like earthen. The unpainted articles are now coated with drying oil. Next they are polished with powdered aluminium. They become dull shining, like silver, and go to the painting division. Painted articles are then varnished and hardened in ovens at the temperature of 120-130 degrees. The heat turns the varnish yellow, the "silver" into "gold" and mellows the vivid design with an even, golden tone.

The Khokhloma dishes, cups and wooden drink pots were used for serving food at holiday feasts. The wooden tableware using at the Moscow house of an important statesman had to look valuable; accordingly, they were modeled on the rich painted plates decorated with real golden fabricated by the jewelers for the luxurious homes of the Russian nobility. Thanks to the special varnish and high-temperature processing they are quite practical and safe in use. You can drink and eat using these Khokhloma tableware, because such wares not sensitive to cold and hot, salty and sour food.

Apart from Khokhloma wood presents of tableware most visitors to Russia will have at least one set of Matrioshka dolls in their luggage. These dolls within dolls have long been a source of fascination. The undoing of the main doll to reveal others almost ad-in-finitem has always produced wonderment and appreciation for the woodcrafts art.

Examples of beautiful Khokhloma wood art presents, Paleh and Mstera varnished miniatures you can look at art store online site. It is amazing that what started out as a true folk tradition over 300 years ago is still thriving and remains basically true to it's roots, albeit on a more organized scale.

HP launches Slate 7 Android tablet with Beats Audio for $169

The HP Slate 7 is beyond fashionably late to the Android tablet party, but it tries to make up for its tardiness with a very low price. When the device arrives in April, HP?s first Google-powered tablet just announced at this year?s Mobile World Congress will cost just $169. That?s $30 less than the the Nexus 7 and Amazon Kindle Fire HD. So how does this value-priced device stand out? HP is playing up the Slate 7?s Beats Audio sound and wireless printing capabilities.

The Slate 7 certainly doesn?t look like a $169 tablet, thanks to its stainless steel frame and soft-touch back that?s available in gray or red. The device measures .42 inches thick (about the same as the Kindle Fire HD?s .41 inches) and weighs 13.05 ounces, making this tablet lighter than the Fire (13.9 ounces) but heavier than the Nexus 7 (12 ounces). The Slate 7 has a microSD card slot and microUSB port.

To differentiate its tablet, the Slate 7 is the first with Beats Audio built in, which is designed to deliver richer and more robust sound. According to Alberto Torres, HP?s senior vice president of its Mobility Global Business Unit, Beats really kicks in when you?re using headphones. However, the Slate 7 does sport stereo speakers. As you might expect from HP, the Slate 7 has wireless printing capabilities via ePrint. The app lets you print from most applications.

The Slate 7 does skimp on some specs for its low price. For starters, the 1024 x 600-pixel display has a lower resolution than the Kindle Fire HD and Nexus 7 (both 1280 x 800). On the other hand, HP says its High-aperture-ratio Field Fringe Switching (HFFS) technology gives its panel wide viewing angles, whether you?re viewing documents or playing Angry Birds Space.

Powering this Android 4.1 Jelly Bean tablet is a 1.6-GHz ARM A9 dual-core processor and 1GB of RAM, and you?ll find 8GB of storage on board. The Slate 7 features a VGA camera up front and a fairly low-res 3-MP camera on the back. By comparison, the Nexus 7 boasts a quad-core Tegra 3 processor, though HP claims that its device offers swift performance.

When we asked HP?s Torres whether shoppers will just opt for the faster Nexus 7 or more family friendly Kindle Fire HD for $30 more, he told us that ?we are going to have a very strong value proposition with Beats Audio and that the design is far superior than those other tablets that you mention.? Torres also reminded us that HP ?wants to be the leader in tablets so to expect other price points.? In other words, don?t be surprised to see a larger, more premium Android Slates in HP?s lineup in the not too distant future.

Stay tuned for Laptop's hands-on impressions of the Slate 7 at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

Singapore players go door-to-door to bring in crowds

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Fed up of playing in front of sparse crowds in Singapore's poorly attended S.League, players from Balestier Khalsa are going door-to-door to try to drum up their fan base.

"The more often the players go knocking on doors, the higher the chances of them becoming familiar with residents," Balestier chairman S Thavaneson told Monday's Today newspaper.

"Who knows, they may become curious and decide to watch a game or two."

While Singaporeans are huge football fans, they are far more interested in watching English Premier League giants Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal on television rather than going to see local teams like Balestier, Woodlands Wellington and Tanjong Pagar United.

Average attendances in the 12-team S.League fell to 932 last year and organisers are heavily promoting a 'Support our S.League' campaign to address the concerns.

Thavaneson was hopeful the door-to-door campaign could help Balestier sell out their small stadium in central Singapore throughout the 2013 season, which began on Wednesday.

"There are 100,000 residents in Toa Payoh, if we can bring in just 3 percent of them to our stadium, we will have a full house each time," Thavaneson said.

Amid mounting pressures, some see potential for new Palestinian uprising

Thousands turned out for the funeral today of a Palestinian who died in an Israeli jail. Some see a new intifadah as the only way to fight back as tensions rise, but many say that could hurt the Palestinian cause.

Sair and Ramallah, West Bank

Less than a month before President Obama is to visit Jerusalem and Ramallah, raising hopes he will help bring Israelis and Palestinians back to the peace table, some see the West Bank heading in a very different direction.

Many Palestinians say the accumulating pressures of Israeli occupation, an economic crisis, expanding Israeli settlements, and now the death of a Palestinian prisoner in an Israeli jail over the weekend could turn pockets of unrest into a widespread uprising.

?The issue of the prisoners is only one point that created this eruption,? said Sheikh Issa Jaradat, the former mayor of Sair, at the funeral for deceased prisoner Arafat Jaradat. People filled every rooftop, balcony, and open patch of grass surrounding the village square as Jaradat?s coffin was carried through the crowd, sparking fierce whistling and a few gunshots.

?The fact that so many people are here shows that this is not just about the suffering of Sair. The whole West Bank is suffering,? says the sheikh. ?This could easily be the beginning of an intifada.?

Palestinians have blamed Jaradat?s death on Israeli torture, citing evidence from the autopsy, although Israel denies this and the final medical analysis has yet to be released.

But even before his death on Feb. 23, momentum had grown around the prisoner issue, with four prisoners on a hunger strike. On Saturday, clashes erupted between Palestinian villagers and settlers in the village of Qusra, near Nablus, and Palestinians clashed with Israeli soldiers in Hebron the following day, sparking a flurry of Israeli media reports about a brewing intifada. Some 4,500 prisoners launched a 24-hour hunger strike yesterday in solidarity with Jaradat.

A new intifada will hurt us: poll

Some Palestinians see a third uprising as the only way to fight back against an Israeli military occupation and grab the attention of the international community, which many feel has largely forgotten Palestinians since they committed to finding a peaceful solution.

Some 32 percent of Palestinians support an intifada, according to a poll by Arab World for Research & Development published Feb. 21, before Jaradat?s death. A strong majority of 65 percent oppose a new intifada, however, with 41 percent of respondents saying it will hurt the Palestinian cause.?

Indeed, such an uprising could work against Palestinian interests in several ways. It could bolster Israel?s argument that it has no partner for peace, enabling it to continue expanding settlements in the West Bank unfettered by negotiations. It could also provide Israeli justification for maintaining or increasing checkpoints, arrests, and administrative detention in the name of security.

That has led some to surmise that Israel may be intentionally stirring up unrest rather than trying to contain it ??although Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu yesterday transferred $100 million in tax revenues to the Palestinian Authority in what some saw as an attempt to ease the situation.

?I don?t believe Israeli is worried. I believe they would like another confrontation,? says Qadura Fares, head of the Palestinian Prisoners Club and a prominent Fatah member, who is skeptical of the potential for a full-blown intifada before Fatah and Hamas reconcile. ?But if we have reconciliation and we begin planning our steps together, then maybe Netanyahu will be worried about any Palestinian reaction or a new intifada.?

A house divided cannot protest?

The prisoner issue, which resonates with all Palestinians, could provide the common cause needed to bring Fatah and Hamas back together. Mr. Fares says that?both Fatah and Hamas are united in wanting to save the life of the four prisoners on a hunger strike ??one of whom, Samer Issawi, is said to be in critical condition after an on-off strike that began more than 200 days ago. He is one of a number of Palestinian prisoners released in exchange for captured soldier Gilad Shalit, only to be rearrested in what Palestinians say is a violation of the deal.

Umm Abdullah, a Hamas supporter in Ramallah whose husband, Jamil Tawil, was jailed last month for the 14th ?time, says she and other Hamas supporters would like to join demonstrations over the prisoner issue but are afraid that Palestinian Authority (PA) intelligence sources will report them to the Israelis. She describes the PA as ?spies to the enemy? ? Israel. Both she and her daughter have also spent time in jail and don't want to give the Israelis any reason to rearrest them.

?We are being scrutinized, we are being watched in every sense,? she says, sitting by a portrait of her nephew, who carried out a suicide bombing in Jerusalem in 2001. ?Therefore, reconciliation can?t take place without confidence-building measures.?

?This is a strong message to Obama?

At the funeral today for Jaradat in Sair, just outside of Hebron, supporters of the Fatah-affiliated Al-Aqsa Brigades chanted, ?Let the olive branch fall and let the weapon always lead to victory?. Let Tel Aviv be set on fire.?

Even as a rival cluster of Hamas supporters tried to out-chant the group, others insisted Palestinians were united in their fight against Israel.

?Besides Fatah, besides Hamas, we the people of Palestine are all united in challenging the occupation,? said Rami Hijjah, a business student and student council member at Polytechnic University in Hebron who says he hopes ?we all will follow [Jaradat] as martyrs.?

?Palestine will not be liberated until we all sacrifice and feed its soil with our blood,? he said, surrounded by fellow student council members. ?We have to continue this escalation of our protest?. My generation will not stay quiet.?

Few protesters interviewed expressed any hope that Obama would be willing or able to improve the situation when he visits next month. One referred to Israel as America?s ?spoiled child.? But at least some felt they were conveying an important message to him and other world leaders.

?The whole world has given us a deaf ear instead of an open ear and an open eye,? says Sheikh Jaradat. ?I feel this is a strong message to Obama and all the world: Look, we do not accept this miserable situation ? and the injustices committed against our people.?

The Economic Growth Imperative Within Capitalism And The Islamic ...

Federal Hall, Wall Street

Federal Hall, Wall Street

By New Civilisation -- (February 23, 2013)

By Jamal Harwood and Sarfraz Wali

Introduction

There has been much discussion during the on-going financial crisis, on how to initiate a sustained recovery and the consensus shown by the mainstream commentators has been through returning to sustained economic growth.

Such is the focus in the capitalist order towards growth, that any program or strategy that is not able to demonstrate how compounding levels of growth can be achieved is not given credibility and hence many, such as the Turkish economics professor Timur Kuran, have written extensively showing how the Shariah has rules which limit the ability of economies to grow and hence are an impractical alternative to the current order.

It is the aim of this paper to demonstrate that the current capitalist economic paradigm with its fractional reserve banking model has within it a destructive growth imperative which is on an unsustainable trajectory and to present Islam?s alternative approach to the subject.

Section 1:? What is economic growth and how is it measured

Economic output is the volume of goods and services produced over a financial year. The measure is called GDP or Gross Domestic Product. Other measures such as the Gini Coefficient have been developed to measure the distribution of wealth among the population.

A coefficient of 0 suggests a completely even distribution and 1 suggests totally uneven distribution where a small number of market participants own the majority of wealth. It is worth noting that this figure is moving towards 1 in the states which adopt the growth strategy and is something the Occupy movement has tapped into.

The disruption in continual growth in output for 2 successive quarters is defined as a recession and this is regarded as a severe harm to the economy necessitating economic management to minimize the duration of the slowdown in output. This is the essence of the business cycle which is the alternating phases of growth and contraction which have been witnessed for hundreds of years under capitalism.

What then are the stated outcomes sought from economic growth?

According to all mainstream schools of Capitalist economic thought, growth in production is the solution to the fundamental economic problem facing society due to the coupling of the unlimited wants of man in relation to the limited resources available to satisfy such wants. This definition includes both needs and wants and not just basic needs.

The thinking of the founders of the first modern economic school of thought argued that increasing production was the key to maximizing happiness for the individual.

Adam Smith, the founder of modern Capitalism, considered that if the society focused on maximizing production, this would equate with distributing wealth to the greatest number of individuals. His focus was not on targeting distribution as he felt that distribution would be a natural by-product of materialistically driven individuals all seeking their self-interest. In his book ?The Wealth of Nations? Smith quotes:

?By pursuing his own interest he frequently promotes that of the society more effectually (sic) than when he intends to promote it?.

Soon it became clear that the unregulated free market approach of the Classical school of Adam Smith was good at increasing production but deficient as far as the distribution of the gains of higher rates of production.

The next development was the neoclassical school, which emerged at the end of the 19th Century, proposing new ideas relating to value. As far as the breakthrough in the view of value and exchange, its input was to bring in a more accurate way of price formulation as far as considering both demand and supply and at the micro economic level. This had some positive impact on wages being more likely to be linked to the value that the labourer?s service provided, however no distinct policy changes were associated at the macro-economic level with the emergence of the neoclassical school as far as formal re-distribution of wealth.

Since then, new thinking came in the latter part of the 20th Century through works such as the 1956 book entitled ?The Future of Socialism? which argued for a new way of breaking the disparity between rich and poor by not focusing on the size of the slice but the size of the pie. The argument being the same slice of a bigger pie would give more wealth to the less privileged classes.

We shall now turn to a discussion on the schools of modern capitalist economic thought relating to growth and demonstrate the single minded attitude of the mainstream approaches towards endless and exponential growth. These schools fundamentally differ over key factors that hinder growth through the mechanics of what is called the business cycle. It is of no surprise that much focus is thus placed on the business cycle by all capitalist schools of thought.

A key argument is that if a theory can help minimize the slowdown in growth that occurs during a downturn in the business cycle, its policy proscriptions should be adopted by nations seeking endless growth.

However there are some non-mainstream schools, which reject the paradigm of growth. Rejection of growth as an endless strategy was in fact advocated by the mainstream schools including Adam Smith himself and Keynes given the obviously limited capacity of the earth to sustain growth indefinitely. Renewed interest in this area was spurred by a study by a think tank called Club of Rome whose study in 1972 called ?Limits to Growth? argued that the ecosystem imposes limits to growth. From this have arisen branches such as those who argue for a steady state economy that plateaus after a period of exponential growth, and Welfare Economics who differentiate between good growth and bad growth, the latter being termed uneconomical growth.? More extreme movements have also arisen such as the De-growth movement who argue for downscaling production. However these are considered fringe ideas and we now turn to the mainstream view which advocates continual growth.

Section?2: Current Approaches to Economic Growth

The main schools can be broadly grouped into the following camps:

1.????????????? Classical

2.????????????? Keynesian

3.????????????? Neo Classical which includes Monetarists and Rational Expectations

4.????????????? New Keynesian/New Classical

The formulation of the classical school as stated was the overwhelming belief in the efficiency of free markets to self-regulate themselves. It was felt that the laws of supply and demand were sufficient to ensure the allocation of resources would always flow to the most worthy projects and temporary gluts would be short lived as unemployed workers would easily accept lower paid jobs to regain employment.

It became clear very early on that in reality many market imperfections would act as impediments to this idealistic model and some type of interventionist approach by the state would be required to ease the market mechanism along to achieve this level of efficiency. Such intervention takes the form of monetary and or fiscal policy as the primary means of perpetuating the boom phase and minimizing the bust phase of the business cycle.

The period from the work of Adam Smith in 1776 with the publication of his famous book ?The Wealth of Nations? to the onset of the Great Depression following the 1929 stock Market crash in the US was the golden era of the neoclassical school which deemed there to be a minimal role for the state. It became clear after a short while that the market was unable to recover by itself and needed active governmental efforts to kick start a recovery.

Prices were declining and unemployment was rising and the market was unable to self-correct from this situation. The saviour was the British economist John Maynard Keynes who entered the debate with his influential book ?The General Theory of Employment, Interest & Money? published in 1936.

The central concept from the work of Keynes was that markets when in a downward spiral would not recover and the government needed to act as a catalyst to reinvigorate demand for goods and services through increased spending when the private sector was saving. This would however increase government deficits, nevertheless the argument was put that when times are good, taxes could be used to pay for such emergency spending for when times are bad.

This approach, adopted by the 1933 Roosevelt administration, was so instrumental in ending the Great depression that Keynes ideas ruled supreme until the 1970?s when new phenomena called stagflation baffled economists on both sides of the Atlantic. This reality threw into question the policy proscription devised by the Keynesian revolution and the new saviour was the Chicago School economist named Milton Friedman whose ideas formed the Monetarist school which remained popular from the late 70?s until the high inflation induced after the end of Bretton Woods was reigned in.

Stagflation saw the simultaneous upward climb of unemployment and inflation. Prior to this, as depicted by the Philips curve, there was always perceived to be an inverse relationship between the two where governments could bring down unemployment at the cost of some inflation and vice versa. As far as unemployment and the supply of money, if there is inadequate money in circulation to sustain trade requirements, then traders will be unable to trade at current prices as they lack the means to conduct their transactions. This would cause unemployment as traders would be unable to trade and be forced to start laying off staff due to the lack of sales for their production.

Therefore Friedman argued that the supply of money should be kept at an optimal level to avoid either extreme. Furthermore, he advocated that there was a `natural rate of unemployment? which the government shouldn?t take action to reduce and instead the government should try to control the money supply so that it was in line with the level of economic activity. This theory was implemented through aggressively raising interest rates to soak up the excess money supply which brought the hyperinflation of the 1970?s to an end.

Other schools such as the Rational Expectations School lead by Robert Lucas came to prominence since the mid 1980?s that added that people could no longer be tricked by the government policy tools and that they would anticipate the actions that the state?s economists would try to do and by so doing would be able to negate the intended aim of such governmental policies. For example when the government would increase the money supply economic agents would tend to bargain for higher wages ahead of time and firms would increase prices, so the effect of lowering unemployment which would otherwise have occurred, is not realised.

This insight was not new in that Friedman also used expectations to explain stagflation by arguing that economic agents anticipate the actions of the government when the government increase the money supply and the effect of lowering unemployment does not occur as economic agents would tend to bargain for higher wages ahead of time and similarly firms would increase their prices ahead of time and this would fuel inflation above the level intended by government policy and hence would render the attempt to reduce unemployment ineffective.

Regarding the development in ideas related to rational expectations, both Keynesians and neoclassical schools reinvented themselves with new and post prefixes.

Other schools such as the Austrian School are variations of these themes and more recent contributions have come from what is known as behavioural economics which try to incorporate the physiological disposition of individual behaviour to explain the un-coordinated and often irrational behaviour of economic agents which prevents markets behaving in an optimal self-adjusting manner.

The final question to ponder is the issue of what the Policy differences are between the major schools. The preceding discussion is quite abstract as far as how theorists such as Keynes and Hayek, who is popularly characterised as the extreme end of the spectrum of mainstream thought, see the economic fundamentals necessary to prolong boom and minimise the bust phase of the business cycle. As far as policy, this difference manifests in the form of monetary and fiscal policy and which instrument is favoured to help return an economy that was in growth, towards growth in a downturn.

Other ways of framing this difference are also well known such as big government vs. small government or whether to regulate or ?get out of the way of business? a game cry of the right popularised by the ?tea party movement ? in the US. Ultimately these labels all point back to the fundamentally different views presented by the schools mentioned above.
