Only In Japan: Charity Breast Squeeze

Whether one meets it with shock and outrage or unabashed enthusiasm, a charity breast squeeze is bound to get attention. And that might have been part of the idea behind a Japanese porn channel's recent interactive fundraiser.

Japan's Paradise TV hosted the breast squeeze benefit as part of "Erotica Will Save The World," a 24-hour live-streamed event that took place Aug. 25-26 in Tokyo.

All money raised at the charity breast squeeze benefitted STOP!AIDS, an organization aimed at promoting AIDS awareness, treatment and prevention. It is unaffiliated with the Stop AIDS Project that is run by the San Francisco AIDS Foundation.

After making a donation and sanitizing their hands, participants over the age of 18 were allowed to squeeze the breasts of one of 10 Japanese adult video actresses, according to Rocket News 24. A limit of two squeezes per hand were allowed: If donors felt like copping another feel, they had to give again.

Paradise TV, a Japanese satellite porn channel known for its "wacky, perverted programming," has a reputation for "stupidity," sleaze, and directly engaging its subscribers. One of the channel's most popular shows is called "I Will Lose My Virginity," which involves a two-hour live broadcast of a woman?s first sexual encounter.

"Weeks in advance, a promo asking subscribers whether they would want to see the first experience of a certain female virgin, who receives a proper introduction during the spot," The Tokyo Reporter wrote. Demand -- tabulated in phone calls and e-mails -- dictated whether or not the show would proceed.

Although risque methods of charity fundraising aren't unheard of in the Western world, they often take the less-interactive form of topless or partially-nude calendars, which have been used to raise money for college athletic clubs.

While the practice is so familiar as to be lampooned, scandal has erupted over such charity photos in the past.

In 2011, furor erupted after sexy stills taken by the women's swim team at the University of Portsmouth in the U.K. for a fundraising calendar ended up posted to porn websites, The Sun reported.

Apple rejects app for tracking U.S. drone strikes

Steven Musil
CNet
Sept 1, 2012

Apple has rejected an?iPhone app designed to keep track of fatalities caused by U.S. drone strikes for its ?objectionable? content.

The company withheld App Store approval for Drones+, an app that sends text messages to iPhones whenever the media reports casualties resulting from a drone strike and shows users the locations of drone strikes on a Google map. (See brief video demonstration below.) Apple has rejected the app three times this summer, the most recent of which cited App Store guidelines that prohibit ?objectionable? content, according to Josh Begley, the app?s creator.

?We found that your app contains content that many audiences would find objectionable, which is not in compliance with the App Store guidelines,? the company wrote Monday in an e-mail to Begley, according to a?Los Angeles Times report.

CNET has contacted Apple for comment and will update this report when we learn more.

Begley, a graduate student at New York University, told The Times that he understood Apple?s position.

?I totally understand it from Apple?s perspective,? he said. ?They don?t want to have anything that could be considered controversial by anyone. I get that, and I understand that.?

Is the Episcopal Church a Bain Capital Investor?

Last night many Episcopalians were shocked to hear Mitt Romney said that ?The Episcopal Church? was an initial investor in Bain Capital:

So we started a new business called Bain Capital. The only problem was, while WE believed in ourselves, nobody else did. We were young and had never done this before and we almost didn?t get off the ground. In those days, sometimes I wondered if I had made a really big mistake. I had thought about asking my church?s pension fund to invest, but I didn?t. I figured it was bad enough that I might lose my investors? money, but I didn?t want to go to hell too. Shows what I know. Another of my partners got the Episcopal Church pension fund to invest. Today there are a lot of happy retired priests who should thank him.

On Twitter, Diana Butler Bass and I immediately began tweeting about divestment, with Father Albert Cutie and others quickly joining the conversation:

/images/managed/twit1.gif

/images/managed/twit2.gif

/images/managed/twit3.gif

By morning, the flare-up was the lead on Jim Naughton?s popular Episcopal Caf? blog, drawing comments from around the church about the specific Romney claim and about ethical investing generally.

Now, there are lots of things we don?t know about this statement. First, we don?t know if it?s true. Paul Ryan?s convention speech was so riddled with flat-out falsehoods that even Fox News described it as ?deceiving.? Romney?s, according to fact checkers at the San Jose Mercury News, the Washington Post, and USA Today, was only slightly less mendacious; the continuing falsehood about cuts to health care providers spun by the Romney campaign as cuts to Medicare beneficiaries noted as among the larger whoppers propagated in the speech. It seems unlikely that the GOP candidate would flat-out lie about investment by the Episcopal Church, but on a convention in which Clint Eastwood berating what quickly became the Twitter meme #InvisibleObama was the central laugh line within and outside the house?for very different reasons?the campaign?s engagement with reality is certainly worth verifying.

Second, even if it is the case that the financial arm of the Episcopal Church, the independent Church Pension Group, did invest when Bain Capital when it was formed in 1984, that doesn?t mean that they continue to hold that investment within the firm?s nearly $9.5 billion portfolio. CPG?s 2012 annual report does not list individual investment holdings. But, with executive staff and trustees (who are elected by delegates and bishops at the Episcopal Church?s triennial General Convention) with deep ties to the investment community that has certainly lived well outside of the ethical standards one would expect for a Church-affiliated financial organization, it?s certainly fair for Episcopalians to demand more specifics in terms of investment history, current holdings, and, perhaps more important, the ethical principles that guide what many would assume, but which is nowhere stated on the CPG website or in the annual report, are socially responsible investing practices.

Tweeted cries to ?divest now? from Bain may, at the end of the day, be misdirected. But they nonetheless raise important questions to which both the Episcopal Church and its financial affiliate, Church Pension Group, should be quick to respond. Likewise, it seems that church members at large would do well to use the brief kerfuffle over Romney?s mention of the Church to consider its role as an economic being whose actions have implications that extend well beyond church walls.

After all, if Romney himself worried that investing in the firm on behalf of the LDS Church might land him in hell, shouldn?t a generally progressive, mainline Protestant denomination be actively concerned about where and how it invests?

Union student jailed after photo of disabled student using restroom is posted on Twitter

Jonathan David Devito, 18, was arrested at 2:45 p.m. at the school by Tulsa County sheriff's deputies, his arrest report states.

A teacher alerted school officials that "several students were upset over a picture that was posted on Twitter," according to Devito's arrest report.

The photo showed a 16-year-old with his pants and underwear pulled down using the urinal, the report says.

The concerned students named Devito as the person responsible for sending the picture, and deputies wrote that Devito admitted to an assistant principal that he had taken a picture of the student and sent it to friends via Twitter.

Devito is in the Tulsa Jail on complaints of being a peeping Tom with electronic equipment, manufacturing child pornography, distributing child pornography and violating of the Oklahoma Computer Crimes Act. He is being held without bail.

The State of Oklahoma classifies the publication, distribution or participation in the preparation of child pornography as a felony.

If convicted, Devito could be sentenced on each count to as much as 20 years in prison, a $10,000 fine or both, and he would be required to register as a sex offender.

A conviction as a peeping Tom with electronic equipment is considered a felony and is punishable by five years in prison, a $5,000 fine or both.

A felony violation of the Computer Crimes Act charge can result in a maximum 10-year prison term, a $100,000 fine or both.

A misdemeanor violation is punishable by 30 days in jail, a $5,000 fine or both.

Gretchen Haas-Bethell, the communications director for Union Public Schools, issued a statement Thursday:

"At Union we take the safety and dignity of our students very seriously. When we were made aware of an incident at the high school, we immediately took steps to protect the well-being of our students. We notified the appropriate parties and law enforcement officials."
