Disney sure loves them Caribbean and pirates because the studio has set in motion the fifth Pirates of the Caribbean movie, something we all expect to happen sooner or later.
Variety reports Catch Me if You Can screenwriter Jeff Nathanson has been hired by Disney to pen the script. Plot details are under wraps so we won't know what the next adventure will entail until someone with knowledge divulges them. The previous movie, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, was written by Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio.
Johnny Depp, the series' star, will return to reprise his role as Captain Jack Sparrow, and you know Depp, he'll keep on taking those "stupid money" if they keep on giving it to him. His co-stars in the series -- Geoffrey Rush, Keira Knightley, Orlando Bloom, Pen?lope Cruz, etc. -- probably feel the same way, so expect some or all of them to return if the story calls for it.
The four previous Pirates of the Caribbean movies have combined to make over $3.5 billion at the global box office and there's no sign of the series running out of steam. With the exception of the first movie, all of the Pirates movie have made near or over the $1 billion mark.
Jerry Bruckheimer is, of course, producing.
Depp can be seen this July 3rd in Disney's The Lone Ranger, in which he plays the title character's sidekick, Tonto. He is also set to play a scientist-turned-super-computer in the Wally Pfister's Transcendence.
