2013: New Year's Online Marketing Resolutions

Happy New Year everyone! With 2013 just started, it?s new year?s resolutions time again. In order to take internet marketing to the next level in 2013 and make your business succeed online, we?ve come up with a few important client resolutions. True, we all know resolutions often fail as people give up after a while. However, we truly hope that clients, SEO?s, webmasters and marketers will start and follow through on below resolutions. They should be taken very seriously as the success of your (client?s) company can depend on it.

1. Think big & long term

It would be wise to start thinking of internet marketing in a broader sense: it?s an investment in your business, not a cost. It requires a long-term strategy and commitment to get right. For example, many people obsess about keyword rankings. Yes, they are important, but not very meaningful by themselves: if you rank #1 for a certain keyword and get lots of traffic from it, but aren?t able to convert those visitors into buyers, then you?re missing out a lot! Think more in terms of business goals and profits and less about details such as keyword rankings, number of back links to your site or how many Twitter followers you have gained in the last week.

2. Abandon low-level, get-rich-quick tactics

Last year was a chaotic, uncertain year for many website owners as Google rolled out many updates (most notably Panda & Penguin) ?which affected the rankings and traffic. Many people had engaged in tactics that violated Google?s guidelines, but did work (as in improved search engine rankings). However, when the algorithmic updates rolled out, sites that had used these tactics were hit hard, many losing lots of traffic. To avoid these problems in the future, be sure to stay away from short-cuts that try to fool the system. You might be successful for some time, but once caught, you can be in serious trouble with the search engines and not be able to fully recover. ?If you take your business and online marketing seriously, then don?t take these risks and go for white-hat, safe internet marketing strategies. This approach may take more work, but it?s worth the investment.

3. Become a publisher & authority

You might have heard this one many times before, but publishing great content and becoming known as the?authority and expert in your market is the way to go for 2013 (and beyond). It will help with your branding and reputation both online and offline. And, as an added benefit, the search engines will notice this increased popularity and authority too, resulting in better rankings for your website. Find out what your targeted audience wants, what their problem is, what they need and provide it. As a publisher you can provide many types of content like?blog posts, videos, e-books, whitepapers, guest posts, interviews with industry experts, podcasts, infographics and more. Not every type of content will be relevant for all industries, but think about it and get creative with it.

4. Be more active with social media

Last year has seen an increase in the use and importance of social media: not only can you use it to engage and connect with your customers, but social signals (like shares and re-tweets of your content etc) are becoming increasingly important to search engines as well. Basically, they use this to better gauge which websites are worthy of showing in their top search results. A good example is Google+. Especially from an SEO perspective it makes sense to create a Google+ page for Business and optimize it for enhanced visibility in the search engines.

I hope you find these resolutions useful and follow them. If so, then 2013 should become a great year for your online marketing and your business!
